The Art of Ray Louis
Ray Louis has been fascinated with the tools and weapons of mankind since he can remember. The “aura” of his creations embody a connection with the past that is readily apparent. We hope the images presented here help you experience that feeling - as brought to life by Ray’s hands. His dedication to “how it must have been” will undoubtedly satisfy your search for authenticity.
Some of Ray’s works are based closely on museum pieces. Others are inspirations that have been interpreted in his own way, just as craftsmen did long ago. His art is informed by endless research and communications with scholars, curators and fellow artists.
Areas of Interest
Some of the Native American accoutrements illustrated are ceremonial in nature and others are decidedly martial. Included are rattles, a horse memorial dance stick and a variety of weapons and implements. The tribes of the Northwest Coast, Plains, and Woodlands and Great Lakes areas are variously represented.
Juxtaposed with this collection is a group of “Inuit” items that are almost exclusively utilitarian. (The Inuit, indigenous peoples living for thousands of years in the Artic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland survived and flourished in the harshest conditions on Earth.) These Inuit-style tools and hunting weapons demonstrate the resourcefulness of a culture that combined natural resources with traded and salvaged materials obtained from explorers and whalers as early as the 1600’s. Subtle beauty radiates forth in their ingenious simplicity.
Purpose
Ray Louis has served collectors, decorators, and institutions for over 30 years. He is of Asian descent and makes no claims of indigenous background. But he feels that his lifelong interest in archaeological exploration demonstrates his intention to honor ancient peoples. His unique abilities provide us with “living history” tools in the form of believable, museum-worthy objects.
This website is intended to be an informative and educational showcase of Ray Louis’ talent. Prices are only posted for those intent on owning – his humble wish is for people to simply look - and enjoy.
